Special expedition into the western
Inner Asmat / Papua

Expedition into the up to now rarely visited northwestern Asmat. The tour leads us through the upper reaches of the rivers Unir (Northwest River), Pomats and Dumas, still areas with intact Asmat tradition and culture. There the tribes Asame, Asomor and Asamat are living. Especially their marvelous handicraft (Initiation masks and Omos) is world-famous.

Planned itinerary:

Day  1

Departure from Frankfurt around noon.

Day  2

Around 12.00h local time arrival in Denpasar/Bali. Welcome by our representant and transfer to our hotel IDA. Rest of day no program.

Day  3

Around 01.00h at night transfer to airport. Towards 02.30h a. m. flight to Jayapura/Papua, operated by Garuda Indonesia. Arrival in Jayapura at 08.30h a. m. After short transit, connecting flight to Wamena in the central highlands. Arrival around noon time. Welcome by our Resort staff and transfer toTHE BALIEM VALLEY RESORT . Lunch and free day until dinner.

Day  4

Full day at the Baliem Valley for acclimatization. We will drive to Wamena to do the last preparations for our expedition.

Day  5

In the morning transfer to airport. For mission flights, all luggage will be strictly weighed and distributed to the aircrafts. Our flight time to JIFAK will be around 45 minutes. Until the early afternoon, our complete group should be in Jifak. Tent camp at the teacher. Our boats from Agats should also be there already. We will provide some more food, due to most of the small, isolated hamlets on our tour will rarely have vegetables and fruits for sale.

Day  6

Today is the start of our expedition by long-boats on the upper reaches of the Unir (in old maps, still named Northwest River). We want to get to the village Tomor. Magnificent cruise on the jungle river through absolute natural wilderness. Tent camp in Tomor at a proper point.

Day  7

Today we go upstream the Dumas River to the isolated settlement Surusuru. Here we stay for 2 days to look at the everyday life of the habitants. We want to listen to their traditional music and see their complete artistically producing at a bazaar.

Day  8

Whole day in Surusuru. During a traditional dance festival, we experience the ancient
culture and tradition of the Asame tribes.

Day  9

Today we are guests at the village Munu. The river cruises on the isolated an rarely visited jungle rivers enthuse us. Lunch break on the way at a suitable point.

Day 10 Crossing the settlement Komor (tent camp over here), we reach Saw-Erma.
Day 11

Today camp at Saw-Erma. This place is the biggest settlement of this region and stretches out on both banks of the Unir. Famous area for handicrafts. At the old village Saw, we will view the local handicrafts at a bazaar.

Day 12 Today we start our cruise on the upper reaches of the Pomats River. We require…
Day 13 ... 2 full days before we reach the famous settlement Mumugu. Tent camp on the way in...
Day 14 ...Bugani, another isolated Asmat hamlet of the Asomor tribes. In Mumugu...
Day 15
... we stay for 2 nights. This tribe is famous for his initiation masks and curious carvings, the so-called Omos. These long human figures, used as monstrous traditional musical instruments for inaugurations of the men houses, are the most famous carving arts of the Asmat. In Mumugu we want to take part in a mask festival and experience the ancient Asmat with his unique music and tradition.
Day 16 Today downstream back to Saw-Erma. 
Day 17

Today to Agats. In the afternoon, we will arrive at this administrative centre of the province Asmat. We stay at the small Losmen Pado-Elo for one night. Our boat crew needs time to arrange fuel and food for the continuation of our tour to Timika. We visit the Asmat Museum in the afternoon, where we will find and see a lot of what we experienced ourselves during the last days.

Day 18

Departure early in the morning. Today we cruise along the coast line for about 6 hours. We want to reach our destination, the lonely island Otagwa, around noon, due to the huge sandbanks would cause extreme problems at low tide. Tent camp on this island in a small Casuarine wood. The beautiful beach and the wild, untouched nature invite us to expanded walks in the afternoon.

Maybe there are some fishermen from the coastline nearby, which might supply us with some delicious fish! Anyway, our boat crew knows well how to organize it! In the evening we will have a meal of delicate mussels and fried fish.
Day 19

Today it will take us about 4 hours to get to the island Puriri. This small island is the absolute mother-of-all, tropics, South Seas, Robinson Crusoe! Tent camp at the magnificent palm woods. We enjoy our last day in beautiful nature. Here on the island, some natives are living and will provide us with fresh fish. On that day we will be really indulged by our cooking crew. The wonderful evening mood on this island, which you can circle in around 40 minutes by walk, you will never forget. It’s a little paradise!

Day 20

Today cruise to Timika. The first part leads us through wide-stretched Mangrove woods to the river Mimika. Then upstream for about 3 hours to Mapurajaya, the harbour of Timika. From there we go by truck to our Hotel GUEST HOUSE in the city. In the afternoon, there is time to pack our Asmat souvenirs properly to travel on.

Day 21

In the morning transfer to the airport. Flight with Garuda Indonesia non-stop to Denpasar/Bali. Transfer to Hotel IDA. Rest of day free.

Day 22 Transfer to airport and flight to Frankfurt.
Day 23

Arrival in Frankfurt in the morning.

Please note:

Passport has to be valid minimum 6 months at entry. Please check with your embassy about the visa procedure. At entry to Papua, each participant must bring 2 pass photos for the surat jalan (travel permit for West-Papua). At departure from Bali you require IDR 150.000,-- airport tax.

It is possible to extend your stay in Bali on request. We are pleased to make an offer for you. Please note at your registration.
