day 4 |
Full day in Wamena.
We use that day for a Wamena Tour and our last shoppings and
preparations of our expedition.
| day 5 |
In the morning start of our
expedition: by truck we go up to LAKE HABEMA. Lunchbreak on the way.
Depending on road and weather conditions, we should reach the
starting point of the trekking part in the early afternoon and so be
able to walk for about one hour, before we build up our tent camp in
a typical upland moor landscape.

day 6 |
About 6 hours trekking until
we reach our today's camp. We cross a picturesque river valley with
fern trees and will camp at a highland forest.
day 7 |
Around noon we reach our base camp, the
SOMALEK CAVE. Tent camp in front of the cave, in about 3.600 meters attitude. Our porters move into the cave and setup the kitchen. |
day 8 |
Today tour to the HIGH CAMP, located directly submontane of the mighty TRIKORA WALL. During the ascent we pass difficult points, which we have to pass with highest care. Only a few porters will be with us. The rest of the crew stays in the cave. Arrival at the HIGH CAMP around noon. After a short break and provided that the weather is fine, we can climb the so-called TRIKORA MINOR. All in all an easy ascent on this ridge, which runs parallel in the north of the TRIKORA MAJOR main ridge. Our effort will be rewarded by an unforgettable view.
day 9 |
Around 06.00h a. m. we start to climb the summit of MOUNT TRIKORA. The first ridge we will reach quite fast. From here in western direction to the summit. The summit is really challenging, and should only be tried by well experienced mountain climbers (no vertigo!). The tour along the main ridge presents us gigantic views and is absolutely unique. Decent back to the HIGH CAMP, taking a short loop to an airplane wreck, which crashed around 12 years ago. Lunch break and backwards to our BASE CAMP. There the rest of the crew awaits us. We should relax in the afternoon, as the essential descent to the lowlands is imminent on the next day!
day 10 |
Start of the unique descent from the alpine snow and ice regions into the burning hot tropical jungle. The tracks are extremely adventurous, absolutely fantastic and somehow unreal. Today we must make a specified distance, as there is no possibility to raise a camp on the way! A breathtaking decent of 1.100 meters must be mastered! Tent camp close to a hunting hut in the mountainous rain forest. Extreme caution is indicated! Crashes on the partial vertical paths might have fatal consequences! Before we reach our destination of today, we cross the NORTHWEST RIVER for the first time by a vertiginous liana bridge. From now on, this river accompanies us until the end of the
expedition.
day 11 |
Shortly after the start, we get to the NORTHWEST RIVER. We must cross a difficult bridge. We may have to make some
security works, before we can cross this stone-age construction. Our further route of
the day is quite easy. After a longer lunch break, we want to reach our destination
(small church square) in the early afternoon.
day 12
Strenous passage with a deep descent, followed by a steep ascent, crossing a ridge. Lunch break behind this ridge. From here we go on for around 1 hour, before we get to our planned point for the night camp, located in a garden area of the natives.
day 13 |
Today manageable paths, passing two bigger church squares. Lunch break at a proper point. Our destination is BUA, a bigger settlement of the WAA
tribe.
day 14 |
Short route to a church square, located on a cliffy mountain ridge with a picturesque view. Lunch break at the destination.
day 15 |
Today the last critical descent, down to the mighty NORTHWEST RIVER. A
breathtaking liana bridge in vertiginous height awaits us. We plan 1 hour for security
works, before we trust this construction of natural materials. A crash from up here into the meters high waves of the thunderous NORTHWEST RIVER would definitely be mortally! Further on through relatively plane grounds to the small town
BANGIBIAK.
day 16 |
Final passage to the mission airfield KENYAM. The tracks are relatively plane, we left the mountains behind. We partial directly follow the NORTHWEST RIVER, and for several times we must wade or avoid smaller inflows. Arrival in KENYAM in the afternoon. Tent camp nearby the school with a fantastic view to the mountain chains
of the TRIKORA MASSIV, as well as to the deeper located prime forests in the south.
day 17 |
Rest day in KENYAM.
day 18 |
Mission charterflight to Wamena, transfer to THE
BALIEM VALLEY RESORT. Lunch and dinner at the
resort.
day 19 |
Together with our porters from the
resort, we will have a traditional pig cooking party.
day 20 |
In the morning transfer to the airport and flight to Jayapura. Transfer to our Hotel. After a short
break, start of city tour, incl. visit of the Ethnological Museum and Hamadi Beach with souvenir
market. Back to hotel and dinner at the nearby restaurant.
day 21 |
After breakfast transfer to the airport and flight to Denpasar/Bali. After short transit connecting flight to Frankfurt.
